Mahonia aquilifolium which is also known as the Oregon Grape, due to its vast resemblance to the vine fruit, is being spot lighted as of late as an active and effective psoriasis treatment ingredient. A study published in the American Journal of Therapeutics is one that is giving this ground evidence. 200 subjects participated in a study and were randomly divided and chosen to be given a product containing a Mahonia extract, while others were given a placebo cream. Both groups were instructed to use the cream twice a day for a period of 12 weeks. Efficacy and safety were assessed using the Psoriasis Area Severity Index (PASI) and the Quality of Life Index (QLI). After the 12 week use, results indicated significant improvements in the Mahonia-treated group both in PASI and QLI, in comparison to the Placebo control group. The side effects that were reported were rare and minor (less than one percent).
This is not the first study to be made on Mahonia and its effects on Psoriasis. Almost 2 decades ago, 89 dermatological practices in Germany performed a vast study on 375 patients over a period of 12 weeks. The patient’s PASI Score improved significantly from +5.5 / -4.0 to +2.3 / -2.6. Some patients even dropped out of the study early due to total clearing of the skin. According to the overall evaluation of the study, symptoms improved in about 80% of the patients. 82.4% of the patients evaluated Mahonia positively.
In an additional controlled study, 93 patients suffering from mild to moderate psoriasis were given topical treatment with Mahonia or internal ingestion of Mahonia’s extract. Over 70% of both groups have showed significant improvement by the end of the treatment. There have been additional studies that compared Mahonia based ointments and creams to traditional Psoriasis treatment creams, and most of the patients and dermatologists rated the Mahonia aquifolium to be equal or better than the standard psoriatic ointments. The studies conducted indicated that Mahonia aquifolium is a safe and effective treatment ingredient and ointment for mild to moderate psoriasis.
PsoEasy natural treatment cream contains Mahonia aquifolium as one of its active psoriasis treatment ingredients. PsoEasy products include several other anti psoriatic extracts such as Calendula, Beeswax, Rosemary, Tea Tree oil, Aloe Vera and more. PsoEasy products also contain Dead Sea minerals and vitamins that nourish the skin, as well as treat symptoms caused by inflammatory skin diseases.
